CATHERINE

I wasn’t expecting David – and I certainly wasn’t expecting him to barge into my hallway – but as I drink in his beautifully tailored suit and box-fresh white shirt, I think how nice it is to see him. It always is.

Glancing down at my own attire, I feel a rush of shame, since I changed into my pyjamas the moment I got back from Connor’s, planning to spend the evening on the sofa with the telly for company and nurse the remnants of my hangover.

‘I haven’t been feeling well today,’ I say, thinking I need to explain why I’m not dressed, but David barely glances at me and doesn’t bother to ask how I am. I must admit that rankles, but I put it down to a bad day – he must have heard about Nina, after all.

‘Is there somewhere we can talk?’ David demands, his eyes darting behind me, and I wonder where I should show him to. The living room is the cosiest but it’s messy in there, and the kitchen is tidy but the wooden dining chairs are uncomfortable after a while. Then there’s the bedroom, but I’m almost certain David would not be amused by that. Before I can answer, David grabs a fistful of my dressing gown sleeve and tugs me into the living room and I gasp in shock at how forceful he’s being.

‘Here?’ he says, and I squeak, ‘David, please, let go of me.’

He drops my arm as if I’ve burnt him and refuses to meet my eyes. ‘Sorry,’ he mutters, as I survey the state of the living room and decide it’s not too bad. Quickly folding the blanket I left on the sofa, I gesture to him, ‘You can sit there,’ but he ignores me and takes the small armchair, leaving me to sink into the sofa cushions.

‘Would you like some water or tea? Or I could make you a coffee?’ I ask but he shakes his head sharply.

‘No water, no tea, no coffee. This isn’t a social visit.’

I pick up a cushion and hug it to my chest. David and I may not always see eye to eye but there’s no need for him to be so short, we do go way back after all. Spotting a loose thread on my sleeve, I begin winding it around my fingertip, watching as the skin turns white like a small pearl as I brace myself for what David is here to discuss. Biting my lip, I wonder how much he knows – has he spotted me following him? Does he realise I was at Nina’s house last night?

‘I thought we had an agreement?’ David demands.

I frown, thinking, I thought we were married, but I don’t say that aloud; it will only make David angrier, and he doesn’t wait for a response.

‘Have you been sending me letters again?’

My mouth drops open slightly since that is not what I expected him to say, and I can meet his eyes and say honestly, ‘No, I haven’t.
